Donald Newell

Donald (Don) Newell is a retired Deloitte senior audit partner, with over 40 years of experience providing public accounting, auditing, and professional services in cities such as Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Toronto, and Calgary. During his 20 years working in Toronto, in addition to his client responsibilities, he served a term as the audit practice leader. Prior to his retirement, Don was Deloitte’s Calgary-based Professional Practice Director and Regional Service Leader for the Prairies Public Audit Practice. Post-retirement, he continued as Deloitte’s reviewer for financial reporting to the partnership.

Don has served as an advisory and audit partner for public and private technology, real estate, consumer-business, and financial organizations, including real estate investment trusts and real estate operating companies. He has also been an expert witness on accounting and auditing matters in legal cases. Don led Deloitte’s implementation of Canadian IFRS® Accounting Standards. As a member of Deloitte’s Board of Directors, he served on the Finance, Leadership Development, Reward and Talent, and Strategic Investment committees. Don served on the Auditing and Assurance Standards Oversight Council for three years, participating in various initiatives during his tenure.

He has been a board or committee member for other organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross, Halton Healthcare Services, the United Way Greater Toronto, the Real Estate Council of Alberta, Makadiff Sports, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Don also led major donor campaigns and subcommittees for the United Way in both Toronto and Calgary.

Donald is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and is a Fellow of CPA Ontario and CPA Saskatchewan.
