Auditing Standards
Auditing standards are authoritative standards that help auditors perform high-quality work with close attention to consistency and transparency. Auditing standards support the credibility of auditors and the auditing process – as well as the reliability of financial statements. They ensure all audits are conducted in a systematic and effective manner.
Auditing standards cover topics such as:
- use of professional skepticism and judgment in audits;
- quality management;
- engagement acceptance;
- risk assessment;
- evidence gathering; and
- reporting findings.
In Canada, the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AASB) issues auditing standards. As part of our Due Process, we adopt the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board’s (IAASB) International Standards on Auditing (ISAs) as Canadian Auditing Standards (CASs).
Assurance Standards
The AASB also sets standards that address assurance subjects other than auditing. These include:
- assurance over subject matters other than historical financial statements;
- sustainability assurance;
- reviews of historical financial statements;
- compilation engagements; and
- agreed-upon procedures engagements.
Like auditing standards, assurance standards are requirements and guidance that help practitioners perform high-quality work. The standards also support consistency and transparency through all stages of an assurance engagement.
When an equivalent IAASB standard exists, we decide, on a case-by-case basis, whether to adopt the IAASB standard or develop our own standard.
Access Canada’s auditing and assurance standards in the CPA Canada Handbook – Assurance.
