Volunteer Opportunity – Public Sector Accounting Board

July 27, 2023 News, Volunteer Opportunity

Are you interested in contributing to accounting standard-setting in Canada? If so, this opportunity is for you.

The Accounting Standards Oversight Council (AcSOC) is seeking new members to appoint to the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB).

Under its 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, PSAB has an ambitious work program to develop relevant and high-quality accounting standards; enhance relationships with stakeholders and other standard setters; and support forward-looking accounting and reporting initiatives, such as sustainability.

We want to hear from you

Responsible for volunteer appointments, AcSOC maintains a balance of different backgrounds and perspectives amongst PSAB members. Candidates with one or more of the following attributes are particularly encouraged to apply:

  • from Indigenous governments and/or communities;
  • from government Controllers communities; and
  • from Eastern or Western Canada.

What’s in it for you

  • Give back while gaining in-depth knowledge and experience.
  • Learn about the roles various organizations play to ensure that Canadians can rely on and trust the Canadian public sector accounting standard-setting process.
  • Understand the processes by which accounting standards are established.
  • Work with the newly established Canadian Sustainability Standards Board.
  • Contribute to the development of high-quality and internationally recognized financial reporting standards for the public sector.
  • Recognize the challenges involved in setting standards that apply to all public sector entities.

About the role

This volunteer role:

  • Requires a minimum time commitment of approximately 150 hours a year which includes:
    • preparation and meeting time;
    • opportunities to represent PSAB by conducting presentations; and
    • stakeholder outreach.
  • Involves a combination of virtual meetings and about two in-person meetings per year in Toronto. (Please note: the estimated time commitment excludes travel.)
  • Is effective April 1, 2024, for a three-year term, with the possibility of renewal for a second term.
  • Is unpaid with travel and other relevant costs reimbursed.

AcSOC continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion on its Council and throughout the Boards. Lasting change can only happen if we all take action to address systemic racism and structural inequality, while creating opportunities for underrepresented communities. As such, we encourage nominations for women, Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, 2SLGBTQ+ persons, and persons with disabilities. If you require a disability-related accommodation to participate in our volunteer recruitment process, please email us at [email protected] and we’ll be happy to work with you to meet your needs.

We thank everyone for their expression of interest—and are truly appreciative of the time individuals put into applying—but with the limitations of time only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

To be considered for appointment as a PSAB member, please provide an expression of interest and a CV outlining the following:

  • Your interest in this role.
  • Your strengths and capabilities relevant to the role.
