Volunteer Opportunity – Accounting Standards Board

Are you interested in contributing to accounting standard-setting in Canada? If so, this opportunity is for you.

The Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) is an independent, volunteer body that serves the public interest by setting accounting standards in Canada.

The Opportunity

The Reporting and Assurance Oversight Council (Oversight Council) is responsible for board appointments and seeks one new member. Appointments will be effective April 1, 2025 for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal.

The Ideal Profiles

Candidates with one or more of the following experiences and attributes are particularly encouraged to apply:

  • Individuals who are involved with private enterprise financial reporting, either as a practitioner or a financial statement user.
  • Individuals who are bilingual, including the technical application of accounting standards in French.

What to Expect

This role:

  • involves a time commitment of approximately 300 hours a year, including preparation and meeting time (excludes potential travel for meetings);
  • involves approximately 11 meetings per year, including about four in-person meetings in Toronto with others hosted virtually; and
  • is unpaid, with travel and other relevant costs reimbursed.

In addition, please note the following:

  • Candidates are not required to hold a professional accounting designation.
  • Board members serve in their personal capacity. They are expected to act objectively and to vote according to their own beliefs, experience, and judgment based on the information they have and the discussions they have taken part in, and not according to the views of any organization with which they are associated.
  • The Oversight Council oversees the selection process and appoints new Board members. Interviews are expected to take place between October and December 2024. The Oversight Council aims to approve appointments in February 2025.
