Volunteer Opportunity – Accounting Standards Board

July 25, 2023 News

Are you interested in contributing to accounting standard-setting in Canada? If so, this opportunity is for you. The Accounting Standards Oversight Council (AcSOC) is seeking new members to appoint to the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB).

Under its 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, the AcSB has an ambitious work program to deliver relevant and high-quality accounting standards, support improving the quality of reporting beyond the traditional financial statements, and grow the AcSB’s international influence.

We want to hear from you

Responsible for volunteer appointments, AcSOC maintains a balance of different backgrounds and perspectives amongst the AcSB’s members. Candidates with one or more of the following attributes are particularly encouraged to apply:

  • background with not-for-profit organizations
  • users of financial statements
  • responsible for the preparation of financial statements in accordance with IFRS® Accounting Standards
  • from Western Canada

While the AcSB’s working language is English, being bilingual is an asset.

What’s in it for you

  • Give back while gaining in-depth knowledge and experience.
  • Learn about the roles various organizations play in ensuring that investors and the public-at-large can rely on and trust the Canadian accounting standard-setting processes.
  • Understand the processes by which accounting standards are established.
  • Liaise with international accounting standard-setters.
  • Work with newly established international and Canadian sustainability standards boards.
  • Contribute to the development of high-quality and internationally recognized financial reporting standards.
  • Recognize the challenges involved in setting standards that apply to both larger and smaller entities, and the implications of these challenges on oversight.

About the role

This volunteer role:

  • Requires a minimum time commitment of approximately 300 hours a year, which includes:
    • preparation and meeting time;
    • opportunities to represent the AcSB by conducting presentations; and
    • stakeholder outreach.
  • Involves a combination of monthly virtual meetings and about four in-person meetings per year in Toronto. (Please note: the estimated time commitment excludes travel.)
  • Is effective April 1, 2024, for a three-year term, with the possibility of renewal for a second term.
  • Is unpaid, with travel and other relevant costs reimbursed.

AcSOC continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion on its Council and throughout the Boards. Lasting change can only happen if we all take action to address systemic racism and structural inequality, while creating opportunities for underrepresented communities. As such, we encourage nominations for women, Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, 2SLGBTQ+ persons, and persons with disabilities. If you require a disability-related accommodation to participate in our volunteer recruitment process, please email us at [email protected] and we’ll be happy to work with you to meet your needs.

We thank everyone for their expression of interest—and are truly appreciative of the effort individuals put into applying for this role—but with the limitations of time, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

To be considered for appointment as an AcSB member, please provide an expression of interest and a CV outlining the following:

  • Your interest in this role.
  • Your strengths and capabilities relevant to the role.
